About Rick May / Contact
I’ve been working in animation for more than 18 years as everything from a CG character animator to character TD to CG Supervisor to Animation Supervisor. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to work in all sorts of areas of the industry, whether that be in production, management, or even business development.
My career started out in St. Louis, which also happens to be my home town. In the early 90’s I moved to Los Angeles to work on bigger and better projects. Throughout those years in LA, I was able to work on more than 40 tv commercials, several feature films, and a couple of special venue shorts. In the late 90’s, I moved to the San Francisco area to act as Animation Supervisor on a CG film that turned out to be a huge mess. That disaster led me to form Toonstruck as an extension to all the subcontract work I had been doing back in LA. The new company allowed me to take on larger projects and hire other animators as needed. We have been accepting overflow work from other animation studios ever since. Almost an animation studio for animation studios.
Although Toonstruck continues to operate as a work-for-hire CG studio, it is slowly morphing into something more. It will serve as a homebase for my own content (short films), consulting work, and project development for others. This blog is the perfect place to follow what is going on in my animated life. Hopefully soon I can speak of the more exciting projects about to begin.
