Festival drive.
Posted on May 19, 2007
I’ve slowly begun submitting the film to festivals. So far, it has more or less started out as a trickle. At this point I’m still being careful where it goes. After all, I still haven’t had my premiere and I don’t want to be sending it out willy-nilly only to find out that Joe’s Film Festival is where my world premiere would take place. After I get past this “all important” WP (and the few festivals that require city premieres), I’ll be less picky with submissions.
I started off making a list of upcoming festivals that I had an interest in. They were organized by the next deadline and their festival date. At first, it was a little overwhelming to try and sort out my planned first round submission order. However, now I’ve got it figured out - I’m set for the next few months. After I’ve got the premieres out of the way (and that depends on where I’m accepted), I can be much more free to submit anywhere and everywhere.
As of right now, I’ve only sent screeners to the Palm Springs International and the St. Louis International. Palm Springs for a few reasons: it is an Oscar qualifying festival (long shot, but you never know), it takes place earlier than a lot of other festivals with upcoming deadlines, and it would be easy enough to attend. I chose the St. Louis International because it is also an Oscar qualifier and it is my home town. Unfortunately, it takes place in November and I hope by then to have had my premiere. I won’t hear a yes or no from either of these places for a while.
The plan is to submit to the following festivals in the next two months: Telluride, LA AFI Fest, Hamptons Int, Austin, Chicago Int, Whistler, Omaha, and Cinequest. Hopefully, by the time these festivals take place in late 2007, I’ll have had this first showing out of the way. At that time, I can relax my standards to get it out there infront of as many people as possible.
Most of my choices are made through searches at Withoutabox.com. I’ve probably overlooked so many good festivals. I’m not trying to be a snob, it is just overwhelming the number of fests out there. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.
